Buddhist monk and villagers demand closure of church

January 15, 2017

At approximately 9:30 a.m., around 40 villagers and 07 Buddhist monks entered the Christian place of worship and questioned the pastor about his religious worship activities. They went on to claim that the village was a Buddhist village, and demanded that the pastor discontinues his worship activities with immediate effect. The pastor responded by reiterating his fundamental right to religious freedom. The pastor had called the police emergency hotline prior to this at around 8:45 a.m., when his congregants informed him of a number of villagers lurking nearby. The police, however, arrived only around 11:15 a.m., took a statement from the pastor and advised him to make a complaint at the local police station. When the pastor arrived at the police station he was informed that a villager had already lodged a complaint against him.
