Anti-Muslim riots in Menikhinna

At around 4.30 p.m., large mobs led by Sinhala-Buddhist extremists rampaged through several towns in the Kandy district. A police curfew was declared on the same day, across several areas in Kandy and schools in the Kandy district were declared closed until further notice. Over 1000 policemen, 200 Special Task Force personnel and 200 military personnel were deployed to Kandy to bring the situation under control. Mobs including hard-line Buddhist monks armed with stones, wooden poles and petrol cans, set fire to shops and vehicles while houses and mosques in the area were stoned.
